Collagen is the most plentiful protein in the skin, making up 75-80% of your skin. Collagen and elastin are responsible for warding off wrinkles and fine lines. The majority of age-dependent changes that occur in our skin happen in the dermis, which can lose from 20-80% of its thickness during the aging process. The skin become thin and fragile with dead skin cells building on the surface. Collagen production starts to slow down at the age of 25 and stops being produced all together at the age of 40.
Many factors contribute to premature aging. Sun Exposure accounts for 85% of skin aging. Prevention minimizes wrinkle formation and premature aging. Therefore, to prevent changes in the skin structure, sun protection is imperative as are using quality skin care products that maintain moisture balance, offer antioxidants to neutralize free radical, reduce inflammation, help rebuild collagen and elastin, as well as replenish protective barrier lipids. Quality skin care products and physical sunscreens are a must! Facial massage, chemical peels, microneedling, exfoliating treatments, aesthetic laser treatments, and topical vitamin A and C stimulate collagen production. Since our bodies naturally stop producing Collagen, elastin and Hyaluronic acid we need an outside source of stimulation. Monthly facials are a great way to start along with a comprehensive skin care program. The key is maintaining stimulation to slow down the aging process.
